GELY KORZHEV: I HAVE THE RIGHT

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

Anna Dyakonitsyna

The retrospective of Gely Korzhev (1925-2012) at the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the most eagerly awaited shows in recent years. In today’s Russia, Korzhev’s art sounds a poignant and vital note. In a class of its own, his work was never fully understood by his contemporaries, just as it has yet to be fully appreciated by subsequent generations. His paintings, however, can provide an invaluable key to understanding the history of post-war Russian art, locating it within the broader context of world art of the second half of the 20th century

Gely Korzhev’s Biblical Cycle: HARD STEPS TOWARDS TRUTH

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

Ksenia Karpova

The current large-scale retrospective of Gely Korzhev is part of a series of innovative projects in the Tretyakov Gallery exhibition programme aimed at acquainting viewers with the work of major Soviet and post-Soviet artists. Works from Korzhev’s biblical cycle, on which the artist worked for a quarter of a century - from the mid-1980s until his death - are an essential part of the show: this ambitious project became the major undertaking of the final years of Gely Korzhev’s long artistic career.

MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST

Mikhail Lazarev

In his career as an official Soviet artist, Anatoly Moseichuk (1942-2013) was the creator of architectural landmarks with a prominent decorative element, from stations of the Moscow metro to the Ho Chi Minh Museum in Hanoi. Such was his creative activity in the real world, his engagement with the realities of life as it was then.

LOUISE BOURGEOIS: THE ONE WHO IS NOT AFRAID

“GRANY” FOUNDATION PRESENTS

The “Tretyakov Gallery Magazine” and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art have been collaborators since the latter’s opening, with articles on the shows of Antony Gormley and Mark Rothko, and the exhibition of works from Frangois Pinault’s collection appearing in these pages. Co-editor Natella Voiskounski met with Garage Chief Curator Kate Fowle recently to discuss Garage’s Louise Bourgeois exhibition - one of the major events of the past exhibition season, which introduced Moscow viewers to the artist’s works from the last two decades of her life. Bourgeois was among the very few artists who represented both modern and contemporary art - she belonged to the 20th and 21st centuries equally, both chronologically and artistically.

THE STORY BEHIND A PAINTING

HERITAGE

Natalya Korina

March 16 2015 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alexei Mikhailovich Korin (1865-1923), the academician and professor of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (MSPSA). He was destined to be an artist from early childhood: born into an old and venerable family of Palekh icon-painters, he devoted his whole life to art and left a remarkable artistic legacy.

MIKHAIL GERMASHEV: AN ARTIST AND HIS COLLECTORS

ART COLLECTORS AND PATRONS

Stanislav Kuznetsov

The names of the major Russian collectors - the Tretyakovs, the Morozovs, the Ryabushinskys, the Tereschenkos or the Khanenkos - are well known. But other patrons of the arts and collectors have been undeservedly forgotten, although it is thanks to them and their acquisitions that we have the chance to revisit the work of lesser-known and even forgotten artists.

VEHEMENT WISDOM OF THE INSPIRED Nikolai Chernyshev and the “Makovets” Society

HERITAGE

Yelena Krylova

One of the luminaries of the Russian visual arts, “the last of the Mohicans” as he was referred to by his contemporaries in the late 1960s, Nikolai Chernyshev lived a long life filled with great events and rich in artistic impressions. The beginning of the 20th century saw him move, with his family, from a remote region of the Russian Empire to Moscow. He displayed considerable enthusiasm for drawing, submitting his sketches for the entry examinations to the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. When, to general surprise, he was accepted, he immersed himself passionately in his studies there.
