FLOURISHING IN THE LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURIES, SYMBOLISM ASPIRED TO CONVEY IN ART INTUITIVE INSIGHTS INTO DIFFERENT REALITIES - THE REALITY OF DREAM, REVERIE, MEMORY, FAIRY TALE, LEGEND, OR THAT OF A DIFFERENT, HIGHER WORLD. THIS NEW WORLDVIEW, REPLACING POSITIVISM, BECAME ONE OF THE FEATURES OF THE CULTURAL SILVER AGE IN RUSSIA, AND EMBRACED ALL AREAS OF CREATIVE ENDEAVOUR, INCLUDING LITERATURE, RAINTING AND MUSIC RUSSIAN WRITERS AND POETS SUCH AS ALEXANDER BLOK, ANDREI BELY AND VY-ACHESLAV IVANOV, AND THE RELIGIOUS PHILOSOPHERS VLADIMIR SOLOVIEV, PAVEL FLORENSKY AND SERGEI BULGAKOV BECAME EVANGELISTS AND INTERPRETERS OF THE NEW MOVEMENT: THEY PREACHED ABOUT THE MYSTICAL AND EVEN DIVINE ESSENCE OF ART WHICH WAS BOUND TO TRANSFORM THE WORLD.

EDVARD MUNCH'S ICONIC IMAGE OF MODERN MAN "THE SCREAM" - THE BEST-KNOWN PICTURE IN THE WORLD AND THE SEMINAL WORK OF EXPRESSIONISM - CAPTURES THE VULNERABILITY AND TRAGIC ASPECT OF HUMAN EXISTENCE. INDEBTED TO VINCENT VAN GOGH AND PAUL GAUGUIN, MUNCH (1863-1944) SEARCHED FOR A NEW ART OF DEPTH AND AUTHENTICITY. TODAY, "THE SCREAM" HAS BECOME AN UBIQUITOUS IMAGE OF POPULAR CULTURE, SIMULTANEOUSLY "APPROPRIATED" BY AN IRONIC POSTMODERNITY. BOTH EXTREMES SEEM RELEVANT IN UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEXT OF THE SPECTACULAR PRICE OF $120 MILLION THAT WAS PAID FOR A PASTEL VERSION OF THE IMAGE IN SPRING 2012. THE FAME OF "THE SCREAM" HAS COME TO EXCEED THE FAME OF THE ARTIST: THIS DISCREPANCY SEEMS TO BE DIMINISHING, HOWEVER, AS LARGE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONS MAKE VIEWERS MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE BROADER ASPECTS OF MUNCH'S ART AND LEGACY. CELEBRATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARTIST'S BIRTH, THE MUNCH MUSEUM AND THE NATIONAL GALLERY IN OSLO GIVE A VAST, JOINT PRESENTATION OF THE ARTIST'S WORK THIS SUMMER AND AUTUMN.

THE ART OF THE PRE-RAPHAELITES HAS LONG BEEN A FOCUS OF INTEREST IN RUSSIA. EARLY IN THE 20TH CENTURY LEADING RUSSIAN ART CRITICS AND CONNOISSEURS OF EUROPEAN ART WOULD COMPLAIN BITTERLY THAT THE PUBLIC IN MOSCOW AND ST. PETERSBURG HAD NO CHANCE TO SEE THE WORK OF THE ENGLISH ARTISTS. A CENTURY LATER THE LANDMARK TATE BRITAIN EXHIBITION "PRE-RAPHAELITES: VICTORIAN AVANT-GARDE" AT THE PUSHKIN MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS BRINGS THEIR WORK TO RUSSIA FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER.

THE GREAT SWISS ARTIST, POET AND THINKER MERET OPPENHEIM WOULD HAVE CELEBRATED HER HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY ON 6 OCTOBER 2013. IF THIS WERE NOT SUFFICIENT REASON TO BRING OUT OUR COLLECTIONS AND TAKE ANOTHER INTENSE LOOK AT THEM AFTER THE MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION IN 2006, TODAY THE QUESTION IS - WHAT STATUS CAN HER ART CLAIM AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF RECENT ARTISTIC OUTPUT FROM SWITZERLAND?

MUSEUMS OF RUSSIA

IN 2012 A ROOM DEVOTED TO THE MOST DIFFICULT PERIOD IN THE HISTORY OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS (RAFA) WAS OPENED AT THE INSTITUTION'S ACADEMIC RESEARCH MUSEUM. INTEGRATED WITHIN THE PERMANENT DISPLAY TITLED "ACADEMIC MUSEUM", IT CAN ALSO BE VIEWED AS AN AUTONOMOUS SECTION. ALTHOUGH THE SURVIVING VISUAL EVIDENCE DOES NOT AMOUNT TO A COMPREHENSIVE ACCOUNT OF THE SINGULAR AND DIVERSE LIFE AT THE ACADEMY IN THE 1920S, WHEN THAT INSTITUTION WAS HOME TO DIFFERENT AND SOMETIMES MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE TRENDS, IT NEVERTHELESS WIDENS OUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THIS PERIOD.

DEDICATED TO THE ARTIST'S DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS THE EXHIBITION "KARL BRYULLOV: CELEBRATED AND UNKNOWN", WHICH OPENED AT THE RUSSIAN MUSEUM IN ST. PETERSBURG BEFORE MOVING TO MOSCOW'S PUSHKIN MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS WHERE IT CLOSED IN MAY 2013, PROVED THAT EVEN THE WELL-RESEARCH ED OEUVRE OF SO FAMOUS AN ARTIST N EVERTHELESS CONTAINS ELEMENTS THAT REMAIN LITTLE-KNOWN. THE MOSCOW AND ST. PETERSBURG SHOWS VARIED SLIGHTLY IN THEIR COMPOSITION, PRESENTING WORKS FROM BOTH MUSEUMS ALONG WITH BRYULLOV'S DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS FROM "THE ITALIAN ALBUM", WHICH IS OWNED BY THE CULTURAL INVESTMENT ART FUND "ATLANTA ART".

THE ART OF ALEXEI SHMARINOV IS MARKED BY THE SUBTLETY OF ITS ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION, A PROFOUND KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY AND APPRECIATION OF TRADITION, A DELICATE SENSE OF HERITAGE AND THE INTEGRITY OF ITS ARTISTIC ATTITUDE. THE ARTIST CELEBRATES HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY WITH A MAJOR EXHIBITION AT THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS. IT IS A SPACE FILLED WITH THE YEARS OF HIS CREATIVE STRUGGLE AND SPIRITUAL WANDERINGS, AND THE MULTITUDE OF PAINTINGS AND GRAPHICS FROM DIFFERENT PERIODS ARE LIKE LIVING ILLUSTRATIONS OF A GREAT TALENT PASSING THROUGH THE MOST SIGNIFICANT STAGES OF LIFE.

On May 22 2013 a reception was held at the Embassy of Switzerland in Moscow to mark the publication of the special issue of the "Tretyakov Gallery" magazine, "Switzerland -Russia: On the Crossroads of Cultures". On 10 June 2013 an evening was held at the Tretyakov Gallery to mark the appearance of the special issue of the "Tretyakov Gallery" maga¬zine, "Norway - Russia: On the Crossroads of Cultures".
