Four Photo Opportunities/One Evening
The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be the location of the following events on Tuesday evening, June 14, 5 to 9 p.m.

 

38th Museum Mile Festival (6–9 p.m., rain or shine)

5:45 p.m. Opening ceremony (open to the public)

Remarks by Daniel H. Weiss (President, The Metropolitan Museum of Art) and representatives of the City of New York, to be announced.

The Met is the host for the opening ceremony for the 2016 Museum Mile Festival-a popular New York City cultural tradition that unites the museums along Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th Streets. The ceremony will be held this year on the David H. Koch Plaza in front of The Met. In case of rain, the ceremony will be in the Museum's Great Hall.

 

6 to 9 p.m. Exhibitions and activities free all evening

All seven museums located on "Museum Mile" will offer free admission on June 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. The participating museums are: The Met Fifth Avenue; Neue Galerie New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; The Jewish Museum; Museum of the City of New York; and El Museo del Barrio.

 

P.S. Art 2016 (5-9 p.m.)

5 p.m. Opening ceremony

Remarks by Sandra Jackson-Dumont (Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education, The Metropolitan Museum of Art); Paul King (Executive Director, Office of Arts and Special Projects, NYC DOE); Carmen Fariña (Chancellor, NYC DOE); Agnes Gund(Founder, Studio in a School, President Emerita, Museum of Modern Art); Chris Wisniewski (Executive Director, Studio in a School); and Karen Rosner (Coordinator of Visual Arts, NYC DOE).

These representatives of the New York City Department of Education, Studio in a School, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art will recognize the achievements of the New York City public school students whose works of art were selected for the P.S. Art 2016 exhibition, on view on the walls of the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education. The audience includes the students' families and teachers.

 

6–9 p.m. Public Viewing

P.S. Art 2016, an exhibition of 89 outstanding works of art in diverse media by 90 New York City public school students from prekindergarten through the 12th grade, will be on display at The Met Fifth Avenue, June 14-October 23. The exhibition celebrates the talent and teaching in the arts capital of the world, and is a collaboration between the New York City Department of Education and Studio in a School.

 

 

Museum Mile Festival Offerings at The Met Fifth Avenue

The Museum Mile Festival is a special opportunity to experience The Met on a weekday evening. Recently opened exhibitions feature compelling works of art from the distant past as well as the present, in materials as diverse as gold, stone, metal, wood, leather, plastic, and thread. A robust roster of activities—from performance to artmaking—will animate the halls and open spaces within the museum, and foster creativity and inquiry among visitors of all ages.

 

Exhibitions on view on the evening of June 14:

Activities at various locations throughout the Museum:

  • Chalk drawing with artist Raul Ayala on the South Plaza (indoors in case of rain)
  • Pop-up performances by the Dusan Tynek Dance Theatre
  • Drop-In Art Making led by artists and inspired by the collection
  • #MetKids Animation Stations, a collaborative stop-motion animated film
  • Shape and Space, a group artwork using geometry and geometric tools
  • Seeing Through Drawing, an innovative drawing technique that involves discussion and verbal description, of particular interest to blind or partially sighted visitors
  • Nighttime Stories with picture books
  • AskThe Met! questions from kids, answered by Met staff
  • #MetKids Lounge, an opportunity to explore #MetKids, a digital feature made for, with, and by kids
  • A keepsake of the evening at the #MetKids Photobooth
