Kunstmuseum Bern - Zentrum Paul Klee - Programme 2020

Kunstmuseum Bern and the Zentrum Paul Klee

Kunstmuseum Bern and the Zentrum Paul Klee

The two Bern museums are presenting a first-class programme for 2020 both in their upcoming exhibitions and the special programmes for music, literature and Fruchtland at the Zentrum Paul Klee. A main focus is on women artists in monographic exhibitions of Lee Krasner and Annemarie Schwarzenbach at the Zentrum Paul Klee and Teruko Yokoi at the Kunstmuseum Bern. Further highlights are the exhibition of the remarkable contemporary artist El Anatsui as well as the joint exhibition of the Daros Latinamerica Collection in both houses.

Exhibition Programme 2020

The Kunstmuseum Bern and the Zentrum Paul Klee will be starting the year with the powerful approaches pursued by two women artists. As the first European retrospective in 50 years, the Zentrum Paul Klee is showing works by Lee Krasner, an American artist and pioneer of abstract expressionism. The Kunstmuseum Bern is mounting a solo exhibition of Japanese artist Teruko Yokoi, who has been living in Bern for over 50 years. In the summer of 2020, the Zentrum Paul Klee will be premiering an exhibition of Annemarie Schwarzenbach’s photographic work, which enters into a dialogue with her travel writings in the show.

At the same time, El Anatsui, probably Africa’s most prominent co ntemporary artist, will be guest at the Kunstmuseum Bern. His monumental artworks challenge traditional disciplinary categories and reflect the (post-)colonial relationship between Europe, Africa and the New World.

The exhibitions of the collection at the Zentrum Paul Klee in 2020 throw light on two very special aspects of the artist’s life and how they inf luence his art. Mapping Klee follows Paul Klee on his extensive travels, while Paul Klee: Rebel and Connoisseur explores a new and largely unknown side of the artist's personality.

Further shows at the Kunstmuseum Bern are an Ernst Kreidolf exhibition, a dialogic exhibition of the contemporary art collection and the collection of Marlies Kornfeld, as well as a project in collaboration with Bern University on the Bern Cebes Panel and baroque imagery.

The highlight in the second half of the year is the show Tools for Utopia, which brings the Daros Latinamerica Collection to Bern at the Kunstmuseum and the Zentrum Paul Klee.

Section Programme at the Zentrum Paul Klee

In the music programme, outstanding soloists will be performing at Zentrum Paul Klee in 2020 – among them the soprano Núria Rial and the flautist Emmanuel Pahud. The literature programme is offering an excellent range of events over the first half of the year, spanning Olga Tokarczuk, Franz Hohler and others. FRUCHTLAND will be forging a special link between art and nature as well as culture and agriculture with its sustainability programme in 2020.

The Zentrum Paul Klee is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary on 21 June 2020 with an open house festival and a special exhibition for Paul Klee's grandson Aljoscha Ségard.
