“(…) we may all come out of Pissarro”. Paul Cézanne, “Conversations avec Cézanne”.

A central figure in Impressionism, Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) ranks among the most distinguished artists of 19th century France.

Camille Pissarro. The Studio of Modernism pays tribute to Pissarro, whose achievements have often been overshadowed by his more prominent peers. It also traces how he exerted considerable influence over his artistic circle as a friend and mentor.

On display are 180 works, including prestigious loans as well as pieces from the Kunstmuseum Basel’s own collection revealing the museum's longstanding interest in Pissarro. After first acquiring one of his Impressionist paintings in 1912, it now has a total of eight paintings, 10 drawings and watercolours and 10 prints.

The exhibition sheds light on Pissarro’s intellectual exchanges and contextualizes his oeuvre with works by Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin, Seurat, Signac and Cassatt, among others. Offering a panoramic display of the birth of modern art, the exhibition narrates a story outside the usual canon of art history.
