The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today

The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today

“‘The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today’ features intimate depictions of individuals whose remarkable stories are rooted in the most pressing challenges of our time,” said Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery. “Nearly all of the leading national conversations from the past three years—immigration, the rights of workers, climate change, and the impact of racial violence—are presented here on a personal level. It is a moment to stop, look around, and admire the tenacity and beauty of the American spirit through portraiture.” The exhibition is on view through August 30, 2020.
Don't forget to vote for the 2019 People's Choice Award at the exhibition kiosks or online: portraitcompetition.si.edu

Portraits of the World: Denmark

Portraits of the World: Denmark

Dec.13, 2019–Oct.12, 2020
"Portraits of the World: Denmark"features the painting "Kunstdommere" (Art Judges) by Michael Ancher, on loan from the Danish Museum of National History in Hillerød, Denmark. This monumental portrait from 1906 pays tribute to a tightly knit group of progressive artists in northern Denmark. A complementary display of American portraits from the first half of the twentieth century highlights the artists' communities in New York City that accelerated the development of modern art in the United States.
This is the third exhibition in the museum’s series "Portraits of the World," which previously focused on works from Switzerland (2017–18) and Korea (2018–19). Curator of Prints and Drawings Robyn Asleson curated the exhibition.
