Ilana Goor Museum - Monthly Specials - Mourning / Morning (1977)

A Goor outdoor sculpture located in Nahariya. It was constructed as a memorial, and dedicated by the artist to Smadar Haran, who lost her husband and two daughters in a terrorist attack. A female figure is seen waking up. She kneels and folds her hands behind her neck to stretch first thing in the morning, but her gesture is also evocative of mourning. The geometric sculpture has an unusual composition, combining smoothness with jagged lines, different from the more natural textures characteristic of Goor’s other works. The work is reminiscent of artistic representations of fertility goddesses, such as Willendorf’s Venus.
