Since 2019, La Verrière, the art space of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès in Brussels, has been presenting “Matter of Concern | Matières à panser”, a series focusing on practices revisiting the function and production of art through a renewed interest in its basic materials, invested with spiritual, symbolic, social, therapeutic or magical purposes.

For the fourth segment of the series, curator Guillaume Désanges presents a solo exhibition by the Guadeloupean artist Minia Biabiany (b.1988). In her work, Biabiany addresses the sexuality of Guadeloupean and Caribbean women today in relation with the subconscious imprint of history. Her woven nets and sensual sculptures explore the terrain of the “body-as-archipelago” in a metaphorical approach that proceeds in concentric circles for the reactivation of memories long buried. A poetic, therapeutic practice whose audacity resides in its articulation of vernacular signs, precisely in order to fight cultural exoticism and determinism.
