MÉTAL HURLANT

With texts by curator Sérgio Mah, Marco Bene, François Piron, Joël Vacheron and Sophie Cavoulacos, this Métal Hurlant publication accompanies the eponymous site-specific exhibition of Portuguese artist Alexandre Estrela (b. 1971) - on show until 16 June at Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian in Paris.

This monograph, which can also be read as a walkthrough guide of the exhibition, acts as "a toolbox for the after the fact reconstruction of the art objects". It is centered on an exploration of metal's intrinsic visual, sonic, and haptic properties, as well as on its psychological and physical impact.

Since the mid-1990s, Alexandre Estrela's work has been characterized by an original and idiosyncratic way of aggregating and superimposing a wide range of fields, themes and references: from studies on perception to sci-fi, from popular culture to film and the visual arts, reflecting a vast and incisive investigation into the nature and scope of the image.
