Taught remotely from the Florence campus
November 28 - December 9, 2022
Two-week In-person option in Florence
Write with mastery about figurative art, or simply further your knowledge of art history and the history of literature about art. Writing for the Visual Arts surveys figurative art throughout the ages, analyzing select works by their medium, composition, subject matter and context. By learning the techniques that literature has historically used to write about art, you will develop your own writing skills. An in-person option allows students to experience the Florence Academy from within, while touring the main museums and churches of Florence.
Water Gilding with Alan Shuptine
September 12 - 16, 2022
The art of water gilding with gold leaf is an ancient technique, perfected over hundreds of years. FAA has invited master craftsman, Alan Shuptrine, to teach this time-honoured craft. Students will learn the historical background of water gilding and create their own water gilded frame.
Preparing the wood, applying rabbit skin glue and dry-ground gesso, burnishing bole, applying gold leaf using the water method, burnishing and patination are all parts of this hands-on course. Finally, students will learn the centuries-old art of sgraffito to enhance their frames. At the end of their week, students will take home their own gilded and finished cassetta style frame.
Academic Figure Painting & Portrait Painting with Vitaliy Shtanko
September 6 - 9, 2022 / September 12 - 16, 2022
In the FAA's atmospheric, north light studios, students will learn the essential qualities of classical painting: accuracy, rhythm, light effect and the illusion of form and space. The day begins with a 3-hour Figure Painting class designed to strengthen your visual relationship with three-dimensional form. The limited palette, with its phenomenally broad range of color effects, allows you to focus on color harmony and unity of light.
In the afternoon, students return for Portrait Painting. Both classes are designed to increase the level of accuracy, and fine tune the approach to painting from life in any student’s work, whether experienced or beginner.
Copying the Classical Portrait, Figure or Dutch Landscape with Igor Naskalov
