In addition to hands-on work in the studio, students attend Art History lectures, field drawing, demos, and technical and material lectures. While ideal for beginners, this course offers substantial value to those with prior etching experience.

Academic Figure Painting and Portraiture

At The Florence Academy of Art painting directly from life is the culmination of various skills. This course begins with an in depth explanation of the Florence Academy method, a technical demonstration on mixing colors, organizing the palette, preparing mediums, and producing a painting from life. Students work six hours daily, painting the figure in the morning and the portrait in the afternoon.

Figure Painting

The Figure Painting workshop is a highly-focused two-week course designed to give students a thorough understanding of the methods and processes required to paint the figure in oils. Students work with the live model for a total of 60 hours, producing two complete figure paintings and exploring each step of the painting process, from initial drawing, to under-painting, color study and the complete final work.

Intended to provide a rich and fulfilling stay in Florence, as well as daily fine art activity to substantially enhance your skill level, this six-week course will introduce students to the classical methods of training in the visual arts, enriching your visual vocabulary and providing a methodology that can be applied to other art disciplines. In addition to hands-on work in the studio, students attend guided Art History tours, Anatomy lectures, demos, and technical and material lectures.
