Etching: Masters of Line is a unique opportunity to learn the theory and practice of copper plate etching under the guidance of FAA Founder and renowned painter-etcher, Daniel Graves. With over 50 years of experience in the medium, Graves provides invaluable insight into this intricate art form.

While ideal for beginners, this course offers substantial value to those with prior etching education, covering the fundamental techniques and advanced processes involved in creating high quality works. Students participate in individual and group critiques, weekly group discussions and a final review at the end of the course.

Etching: Masters of Line takes place in The Florence Academy of Art’s new etching studio – complete with four state-of-the-art Bendini printing presses – in the heart of its vibrant main campus.
In addition to hands-on work in the studio, students are introduced to all aspects of line etching and attend Art History lectures, field drawing, demos, and technical and material lectures, finishing the program with at least three completed copper plates and the technical skills to create more in the future.
Students look to master etchers of the past as they prepare their copper plate ground, select and create an image to transfer to the plate, and learn the process of biting, proof-printing, and plate correction to produce their final prints.
At the end of the course students will receive an extensive list of etchers to study and a book list of references to continue to investigate the medium of etching on their own.
