Christie's December Classic Week Continues - London, 13 December 2016

CHRISTIE'S DECEMBER CLASSIC WEEK CONTINUES
WITH 19TH CENTURY ART

This December, Classic Week at Christie’s presents antiquities, Old Masters, sculpture, Japanese art and more. From Constable, Canaletto and Guardi to Burne-Jones, Tissot and Courbet, the auction series features masters of Western painting alongside Japanese prints and armour, Roman marbles, Florentine bronzes and iconic Surrealism.
   
Sales run from 6 to 15 December at our London salerooms, with viewings from 2 December.

Sale Total: £2,274,375 / $2,879,359 / €2,704,232

The 19th Century Art sale was highlighted by Johann Friedrich Overbeck’s (1789-1869) The Banishment of Hagar, which achieved £581,000 / $735,546 / €690,809 against a pre-sale estimate of £150,000-250,000.

The sale also saw the rediscovered work Vecchie Calzette by Angelo Morbelli, a pioneer of Italian Divisionism, achieve £341,000 / $431,706 / €405,449. The work is one of six canvases from the Il Poema della Vecchiaia series, exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1903. The present painting won a gold medal in Munich at the Internationalen Kunstausstellung in 1905 and was last seen on the market in 1906.
