For the 8th edi5on of the Collected exhibi5on curated by Veronika Rudorfer, Bank Austria KunsBorum Wien presents a selec5on of works by leading Austrian women ar5sts from the UniCredit Bank Austria art collec5on including: Renate Bertlmann, VALIE EXPORT, Martha Jungwirth, Birgit Jürgenssen, Kiki Kogelnik, Friederike Pezold, Margot Pilz, Eva Schlegel, Nina Rike Springer, Gabi Trinkaus as well as an interven5on by Agnes Prammer.

The current conserva5on surrounding the representa5on of the female body in art is fuelling much debate within the art world and beyond. The cri5que of sexualised images is loudly voiced in art ins5tu5ons and It is no5ceable that the male gaze, whether that of the ar5st or of the viewer, generally hogs the spotlight. Therefore, women ar5sts who portray other women and thus create images remote from the regime of a male-dominated perspec5ve, are almost completely le] out of the conversa5on and media radars.

Through photography, collage, pain5ng and drawing these ar5sts analyse the objec5fica5on of the female body normalises the concept of “beauty”. The socially determined, supposedly typical female role assignments, are thus cas5ng an individual light onto “woman” and forms of femaleness.
