So that's how you are, the East!

#4 2014 (45)

IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH AND FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURIES THERE WAS A GREAT AWAKENING OF INTEREST IN THE EAST - IN THE CULTURES OF ASIA AND AFRICA, THEIR PEOPLES, THEIR WAY OF LIFE, THEIR BELIEFS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTS. THIS SOURCE OF A NEW ARRAY OF COLOUR AND CHARACTER WAS APPEALING TO RUSSIAN ARTISTS, SCULPTORS AND ARCHITECTS, INCLUDING MEMBERS OF THE LANCERAY-SEREBRYAKOV FAMILY.

#4 2014 (45)

THE FIRST EXHIBITION OF THE ARTWORK OF THE MEMBERS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRICAL AND CINEMA DECORATIVE ART OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS WAS SHOWN AT THE ZURAB TSERETELI ART GALLERY FROM FEBRUARY 4 TO MARCH 16, AND COUNTED BOTH AS A PRESENTATION AND THE DEPARTMENT'S PERFORMANCE REVIEW. THE RUSSIAN TITLE OF THE EXHIBITION, "13-PLUS", REFLECTED THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPATING ARTISTS, ALL LEADING EXPERTS IN THIS FORM OF ART.

Goncharova -"This Name Had the Ring of Victory"

#1 2014 (42)

THE EXHIBITION "NATALIA GONCHAROVA. EAST AND WEST", RUNNING AT THE TRETYAKOV GALLERY FROM OCTOBER 16 2013 TO FEBRUARY 16 2014, PRESENTS MANY OF THE ARTIST'S PAINTINGS FROM HER LATER EUROPEAN PERIOD TO RUSSIAN VIEWERS FOR THE FIRST TIME. DISPLAYING THE FULL STYLISTIC RANGE OF HER WORK, IT REVEALS A FIGURE FOR WHOM THE CONCEPT OF EXPERIMENTATION IN GENRE REMAINED FUNDAMENTAL.

Gleb Pospelov
Early Goncharova and Gauguin

#1 2014 (42)

THE EXHIBITION "NATALIA GONCHAROVA. EAST AND WEST" AT THE TRETYAKOV GALLERY CASTS LIGHT ON MANY ASPECTS OF GONCHAROVA'S ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT, INCLUDING THE INFLUENCE ON HER EARLY WORKS OF PAUL GAUGUIN. THE 1989 EXHIBITION "GAUGUIN. A VIEW FROM RUSSIA" AT THE PUSHKIN MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS HAD ALREADY AFFORDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE1 THE IMPACT OF THE FRENCH MASTER'S PAINTINGS ON THE RUSSIAN ARTIST. BUT THE NEW SHOW OFFERS A WIDER PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUBJECT.

Inessa Kouteinikova
Goncharova, Music and Theatre

#1 2014 (42)

NATALIA GONCHAROVAS SUBTLE, DISTINGUISHED, HIGHLY MUSICAL AND LEARNED DESIGNS FOR THE THEATRE ELUCIDATE A FUNDAMENTAL SHIFT FROM THE EMPHASIS ON THE BOMBASTIC, GLORY-OBSESSED CELEBRATIONS FOR DIAGHILEV'S SPECTACLES TO PERFORMANCES THAT STRESSED THE VIRTUES OF INDIVIDUALITY, FANTASY AND HISTORY. DIAGHILEV'S ABSOLUTE POWER WITHIN THE RUSSIAN WORLD OF THEATRE, SIMILAR TO THAT OF LOUIS XIV, RESIDED IN ITS REPRESENTATION AND CONTROL OF THAT REPRESENTATION, WHICH RESIDED NOT ONLY WITH DIAGHILEV BUT ALSO WITH HIS ARTISTS, WHO, LIKE THE KING'S HISTORIOGRAPHERS, CREATED THEATRICAL IMAGES ON WHICH THE OPINION OF POSTERITY DEPENDED.

Natalia Goncharova. Pochoirs

#1 2014 (42)

THE EXHIBITION "NATALIA GONCHAROVA. EAST AND WEST" AT THE TRETYAKOV GALLERY OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO APPRECIATE NOT ONLY THE ARTIST'S FAMOUS PAINTINGS BUT ALSO HER LESSER-KNOWN GRAPHIC WORK. A VAST BODY OF THE LATTER WAS MADE USING THE POCHOIR TECHNIQUE, AND IS REPRESENTED COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL SKETCHES.

More Than Romanticism

#1 2014 (42)

THE EXHIBITION "MORE THAN ROMANTICISM" WAS HELD FROM NOVEMBER 2013 TO JANUARY 2014 IN THE ENGINEERING WING OF THE TRETYAKOV GALLERY AS PART OF THE "EXCHANGE" YEAR OF CULTURAL COOPERATION BETWEEN RUSSIA AND HOLLAND. FOR THE FIRST TIME THE MOSCOW PUBLIC COULD SEE WORKS FROM THE TRETYAKOV GALLERY ALONGSIDE PAINTINGS FROM THE TEYLERS MUSEUM IN HAARLEM AND THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF JEF RADEMAKERS FROM BRASSCHAAT, A PROVINCE OF ANTWERP. BEARING IN MIND THE UNIQUE FEATURES OF THE TWO COLLECTIONS, THE CURATORS TRIED TO HIGHLIGHT BOTH THEIR SHARED FEATURES AND THEIR DIFFERENCES, AS WELL AS THE EUROPEAN AND THE NATIONAL ELEMENTS OF RUSSIAN AND DUTCH FINE ART. THE NAMES OF GREAT PAINTERS SUCH AS REMBRANDT VAN RIJN AND FRANS HALS, WHOSE MASTERPIECES ARE IN THE HERMITAGE'S COLLECTION OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF DUTCH ART, ARE WELL KNOWN TO THE RUSSIAN PUBLIC. THANKS TO THE FAMOUS FILM, THE YOUNGER GENERATION IS FAMILIAR WITH JOHANNES VERMEER'S PAINTING "GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING" (1665). THE ART OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS OF THE 1800-1850S, HOWEVER, IS ONLY KNOWN TO A SMALL CIRCLE OF ART EXPERTS. MEANWHILE, THE PAINTING TRADITIONS OF THE GREAT AND "LESSER" DUTCH MASTERS WERE CARRIED ON INTO A NEW HISTORICAL ERA, THAT OF ROMANTICISM.
