TEN THINGS TO SEE & DO DURING 20TH CENTURY SPRING SEASON OF AUCTIONS AT CHRISTIE’S LONDON

1. Giants of American Art

Giants of Post-War American painting will be united at Christie’s London this March. Mark Rothko’s ground-breaking No. 1 (1949), is one of the artist’s earliest examples of his mature artistic vocabulary, dating from the pioneering year of his practice and was first shown in 1950 as part of his historic solo exhibition at New York’s Betty Parsons Gallery. Robert Rauschenberg’s Transom (1963) comes to auction alongside a major retrospective of his work at London’s Tate Modern, and demonstrates the radical new visual language that went on to lead a generation of American artists towards global domination. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Untitled has been in the collection of U2’s bassist Adam Clayton for over twenty-five years. A deeply poignant self-portrait, the work offers a rare insight into Basquiat’s psyche at a pivotal moment in his career: a tear drops from his eye; his arms seem to pierce his body like an arrow.

2. Women Artists

Christie’s Impressionist & Modern Art auctions this season provide a platform for women artists known for redefining the art world through passionate determination. In a world dominated by men, Berthe Morisot defiantly pursued a career as an artist and painted the world around her, expanding the boundaries both of artistic convention and of the prescribed roles of her gender. Eva Gonzales, a pupil of Édouard Manet, didn’t exhibit during her lifetime yet she is considered part of the Impressionist school due to the style of her painting. Suzanne Valadon was the first woman painter admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1894 and trained her son Maurice Utrillo; works by both mother and son will be at Christie’s South Kensington.

A group of seven works by Max Ernst include Portrait érotique voilé, offered by the artist’s family, and Les deux oiseaux from the Personal Collection of Barbara Lambrecht. Two works are being offered by The Art Institute of Chicago; Paul Delvaux’s Le village des sirens, created in 1942, and Giorgio de Chirico’s Guerrieri e filosofi, part of the collection since 1954.

The works come from the Heidi Weber Museum Collection; Weber amassed a comprehensive overview of Le Corbusier’s career and was one of the first to recognise the importance of his painting, drawing and sculpture.
